Q. How are The Life Science Dashboard™ reports, from Percepta Associates, different from other market research reports available?

A. Unlike other reports, The Life Science Dashboard™ features an at a glance format that provides rapid access to actionable key market indicators in an easy to understand framework. An overview “key market indicator dashboard” is provided for quick reference. In general dashboards are presented in a “data rich” format with limited narrative. Percepta Associates has applied its industry insight and expertise to interpret the data as appropriate.

Q. How frequently will each segment specific Dashboard be published?

A. Percepta launched this first series of Life Science Dashboards™ in January 2007, designed to take a snapshot of the current market landscape, with the future goal of regularly sampling the landscape to give Dashboard readers a comprehensive, relevant and dynamic view on how the market is adapting to new products, new competitors and new sales and marketing strategies.

Q. Can I see some sample data?

A. Yes, see the “Sample Data” tab under a specific reports information e.g., for Nucleic Acid Amplification.

Q. What is the “Market Opportunity Matrix” included in each Dashboard?

A. Percepta’s Market Opportunity Matrix combines four categories of market data:, customer interest in switching primary suppliers, market share percentage owned by the market leader, market size and market growth rate to measure the competitive landscape of a specific segment.

Q. How are monthly experimental throughputs for specific methods calculated?

A. Survey participants were asked to estimate the total number of reactions they perform each month for the various methods analyzed in each Dashboard. Respondents were asked to indicate if they were making these estimates based on their individual throughput or for the throughput of their entire lab. For respondents that indicated that they were reporting results based on their laboratory throughput, the number of reactions indicated for each technique was divided by the number of individuals in their laboratory that perform experiments prior to calculating arithmetic median and mean values.

Q. How is the projected annual growth rate of a given segment calculated?

A. Survey participants were asked to project how they expect the number of reactions they perform each month for the various methods analyzed in each Dashboard to change over the next 12 months.

The following formula was used to calculate a growth rate for each technique based on responses to the survey.

Growth Rate = ((% of current users projecting >20% increase) x 1.250) +
((% of current users projecting 10-20% increase) x 1.150) +
((% of current users projecting 5-10% increase) x 1.075) +
((% of current users projecting 3-5% decrease) x 1.040) +
((% of current users projecting stay about the same) x 1.000) +
((% of current users projecting 3-5% decrease) x 0.960) +
((% of current users projecting 5-10% decrease) x 0.925) +
((% of current users projecting 10-20% decrease) x 0.850) +
((% of current users projecting >20% decrease) x 0.750) +
(% of respondents projecting that they will begin to use a technique for the first time)

Q. How is market share calculated?

A. Survey participants were asked to reveal their primary supplier for the various segments analyzed. Market share data presented in the Dashboards is based on share of mention as primary supplier and does not account for supplier specific differences in throughput and price per prep

Q. How do you calculate market sizes?

A. Following is the methodology for calculating market sizes for the segments and sub-segments included in the various Dashboards:

Step 1: Calculation of the Annual Spend Per Survey Respondent

We multiply the average annual throughput times the median price per prep (or reaction). times the percentage of respondents performing each technique at least monthly to reach an estimation of the annual spend per life scientist researcher for each product segment.

Throughput used for the market size calculation is an average calculated after dropping the top and bottom 3% of respondents (i.e. dropping the 3% of respondents with the highest throughput and the 3% of respondents with the lowest throughput).

Step 2: Estimation of the Total Number of Life Science Researchers
We calculate the total number of life science researchers that perform molecular biology techniques using journal subscriber and readership data from two popular scientific publications: Science and BioTechniques. Percepta estimates that there are approximately 5 life science researchers for every single life science researcher that subscribes to either Science or BioTechniques.

Step 3: Calculation of the Global Market Size for Each Product-Segment
We multiply the estimated annual spend per researcher on each product segment by the total number of life science researchers performing molecular biology techniques to yield a market size (annual revenues) for each product segment. Product segment market sizes are summed to yield a total market size
